Compared to professionally installed gutters, DIY gutter replacement can save you a lot of money, but there are a few pitfalls to avoid. Check the fascia and soffit for signs of rotted wood (Fig. B, below), which should be replaced before you install new rain gutters. There are many houses that have crown molding or trim boards nailed to the fascia just below the shingles. For gutters to be flush with the ground, you’ll need to remove this fascia board, as we did, or add a continuous strip of wood underneath it.
